Y11 Work Experience Success
Year 11 Skills for Further Education (Seoul) and Skills for Work (Edinburgh) classes had a fantastic opportunity to work in the open, warm and inviting offices of Wilmott Dixon interiors in Central London recently. They practised their independence skills by planning their travel on the train and finding trains to and from their destination. Our fantastic Social values manager Shannon, gave students a wonderful insight of working in a busy office environment, in a calm and caring manner. Students practised their team building exercises in a number of activities, including introducing themselves, completing a scientific task in circuitry as part of a team, and working collaboratively to present the plans for an aspirational, inclusive and environmentally friendly school build – very topical for our students!
Year 11 Skills for Work (Tokyo) class also visited and worked on slightly different tasks in the same office environment, with a more focused look at environmental impact. All classes demonstrated great manners and social skills outside of their comfort zone in the office, and practised further skills in budgeting by ordering a McDonalds for lunch, paying and collecting. They enjoyed the day immensely.
The session plans were thoughtfully designed, and were impactful and interesting for the students, and skilfully adapted in situ by Shannon according to the needs of the students. The format was interactive, both through discussion, the tasks themselves and tours offered of the office, and the impact can be seen by their interest after the fact – students have been reflecting on the experience of the day and what skills they practised, and have shown great enthusiasm for anymore work experience practices that they might encounter.
