Student Veirra’s song inspires school
We wanted to share a compelling piece of music composed by Veirra, one of our incredibly talented students in Year 11 Seoul class. He created a rap about moving to our new school building to help students who might be fearful, worried and or excited about the move.
Here is what he had to say about the creative process:
“Making the song ‘New school building’ wasn’t really that easy. I had to think about how long I was going to make the song, what lyrics would fit with it, and how I was going to make it sound good. Here is what I did.
First I tried making a simple beat. But making a 1 minute and 39 second song/beat can take ages to do. I needed to think about what music genre would be good for the song. I thought a trap beat would work but I thought it was a bit too much. Maybe a hip-hop style would sound good? Again, I thought that wouldn’t work. Then that’s when it hit me, a pop song would be great for the school and the new building!
I first started to think of an instrument that would work with the melody I’m trying to make. I thought a Clean Guitar would be good. Then I added a guitar bass, slapped some kicks, added some claps and high hats. I thought the song didn’t really need to be that long since I was only rapping/singing about the new school building, so I thought of making the song at least 1-2 minutes long. As soon as I finished making the beat, it was up to 1 minute and 39 seconds. Which I thought was a perfect length. It’s not too long and not too short.
Now it was time to think of some lyrics. This level of music is sort of medium, because when you are trying to write down words you think will make the song sound good is quite challenging. Not only do you need to make words rhyme, it also needs to make sense. It’s quite important that you have good vocabulary to say words clearly in your song so the people listening can hear what you are saying. Being good at English would also help as well.
After I finished writing down some lyrics for the song, it was time to actually rap on it. Here’s the thing though. Singing or rapping just one verse can take forever to do. Sometimes it might take you 2 months, maybe even more. Luckily it didn’t really happen with me; it only took me a few tries until I finally got the perfect sounding verse.
As soon as I finished rapping the vocals it was time for the worst part about music… mixing. This was the most annoying part of making the song. Because the thing is you don’t want the vocals to sound too quiet, too loud, too mixed and too unmixed. Mixing can also give self-doubt which a lot of independent artists struggle with if you heard the song like 1000 times. Every time I thought the track sounded good, I would leave it for the next day to see if it sounds the same. Once I finally realised that the track sounded good and showed it to my dad who knows all about music, says it sounds great, the track is finished.
Now all it needs is a good master. For me this is the less stressful part compared to mixing, because for the platform I use, all it takes is just a few clicks and then boom my track is mastered. Then finally after everything was finished, I sent it to Mr Gesla (Head of Middle School) via email and he absolutely loves it which made me happy.
So yeah, that was me talking about how the new school building song was created and how I felt during the experience of making it. Hope you enjoyed reading this. You can now listen to the new school building song on the school website.”
A huge well done, we couldn’t be prouder of you for this incredible composition and for fulfilling your dream to go to The BRIT School!
