Carew Academy Welcomes Students on Exciting First Day at New Purpose-Designed School

Carew Academy celebrated a major milestone as it officially opened the doors of its new school building to students for the first time on Friday, 25 April 2025.

The excitement was evident throughout the school community, with staff having worked hard all week to prepare the classrooms and learning spaces, ensuring a warm and welcoming start for every student.

Principal James Kearns, accompanied by his Senior Leadership Team, were joined at the front entrance by the Mayor of Sutton, Councillor Colin Stears and the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Louise Phelan to welcome students on this special occasion. In a symbolic moment, a ceremonial red ribbon was cut, and the Mayor proudly declared the school officially open.

“It is wonderful to finally welcome students into their new school,” said Mr. Kearns. “This space has been designed with the needs of our students at the very heart of the project. I look forward to sharing stories of how they thrive and achieve in this fantastic new environment.”

As students explored the corridors of their new school, the energy and enthusiasm was a joy to witness. The state-of-the-art facility offers an array of features to support learning and development, including:

  • Carew Brew – a student-led café located beside the school’s reception area, which will also serve as the venue for the school’s breakfast club
  • A dedicated drama and dance studio
  • A sensory outdoor garden
  • A Skills for Life studio flat, designed to help students build practical independence skills
  • A comfortable library to encourage a love for reading
  • Indoor and outdoor sports courts
  • Large, light-filled classrooms, each thoughtfully decorated to create a homely and nurturing atmosphere

Mr. Kearns concluded: “A huge amount of effort has gone into designing and building our school creating a nurturing, inclusive environment with exceptional facilities where every student can feel supported and inspired. The opening marks an exciting new chapter for Carew Academy and sets the tone for a bright future. We are looking forward to getting to know and adding value to our local community.”
